Raves

Legal Mind Altering Products for Raves and the Night Club Party Scene

Raves have been popular since the l980s, originating within the club culture of after-hours’ parties. The rave movement first began in Detroit with club Dj"s sampling early disco records and blending them with new faster beats. The Dj's often used mixers and turntables and the music was upbeat and loud, and generally accompanied by bright lights and other psychedelic visuals designed to enhance the effect of the music. The music then moved to England, where the sound changed.

However, by the mid-l980s, rave parties overseas had developed such a following among youths and young adults, that by l987, London raves had outgrown most dance clubs. It then became common to hold all-night raves—which drew thousand of people in large, open fields on the outskirts of the city. As the movement continued to grow in the late l980s, the first rave parties re- emerged in the U.S. in such cities as San Francisco and Los Angeles.

Raves was now the new wave. From the counterculture of Woodstock to the punk rock of the late l970s, every generation has its movement. The new rage, it seems, is electronic dance music known as techno and the class of 2000 brought with it the largest sub-culture since punk.

Part of this sub-culture is their dress. Ravers (those who attend raves), dress for comfort. Some wear light weight, loose-fitting attire and dress in layers, allowing them to remove clothing, if they become overheated from dancing for hours. Others, especially men, come dressed in the ultra-trendy wide-legged baggy pants, or very loose shorts. Ravers wear T-shirts, bikini tops, tank tops, tube tops, and open-back halter-tops to help keep cool.

However, some Ravers, particularly female, wear costumes to events dressing as princesses, cartoon characters or other fantasy figures that match the theme of the rave (e.g. futuristic, space or mystic). They often wear bright accessories like bracelets, necklaces, and earrings, made of either plastic beads, or pill-shaped sugar cookies. They also use chemical glow sticks. It is not uncommon to see Ravers hair multicolored, spiked, braided or pulled back into Pippi Longstocking pigtails. Nose rings, tattoos, tongue and naval piercing are so common they barely rate a second glance. Ravers are young, usually ranging in age 15 to 23.

Raves have developed over the past decade from a small sub-culture to a highly commercialized business. By the l990s rave parties and clubs were present in most metropolitan areas throughout the United States and in Countries around the world.

Many U.S. rave promoters capitalized on the growing popularity of the rave culture and developed specialized industries which targeted clothes, toys, drugs and music. Private clubs and secret locations were replaced by stadium venues with off-duty police security. They charged high entrance fees, exorbitant prices for bottle water, maintained very dark and often dangerously over-crowed dance floors, and “chill rooms,” where Ravers go to cool down, relax and comfort one another.

Today, at raves, music falls into several categories: ambient, techno, trance, progressive trance, cybertrance, house, jungle, drum ‘n’ bass, techstep, garage, and big beat. Although a casual listener may not be able to distinguish between techno and trance, Ravers know the music well and several Dj’s and bands–unfamiliar to most people–are internationally famous with the rave community... Today’s rave Dj’s are skilled stage performers and are considered artists much like musicians. They mix electronic sounds, beats and rhythms, often synchronizing the music to a laser program. Popular Dj’s sold their music and performs live at the largest rave parties and clubs around the world.

Much of the music is computer-generated, but mixed by Dj’s, who have seen their careers skyrocket from being faceless technicians in the background to masters of ceremonies, center stage and surrounded by eager disciples. Dj’s like Frankie Bones of Sonic Groove Records of New York ,Hipp-E of San Francisco, Derrick May, one of the originators of electronic dance music, and Kevin Sunderson of KMS Records, are flown around the country to play raves. As far as Ravers are concerned, rock’n’roll is dead and the hypnotic, rapid heartbeat rhythm of electronic dance music is the only thing living into the next century.

Ravers often adopt an alternative culture. They are accepting of others, regardless of age, race, religion, sexual orientation, or financial back-round. Raves are a spawning ground for inspiring today’s youth towards building a new awareness in their individuality; an awareness that promotes inner peace, open-mindedness, and free expression of one’s thoughts and feelings about themselves and the world they live in.

Some believe raves are anticipated social events where one can release their anxieties and at the same time, gain insight that there is hope. They believe they are bonding rituals that promotes peace with all, love with one another, and unity for mankind. RAVES are a celebration of life; an escape against the imperfections of the world.

The philosophy of the Rave movement is PLUR - an acronym for Peace, Love, Unity, and Respect. The belief is that the music and atmosphere of the Rave create a positive “vibe” - a feeling of complete happiness that brings about “Peace and Love” into the music and dancing. This movement is believed by some, to be similar in nature to the social/spiritual revolution that began in the late 60s and 70s. – The philosophies of the hippies and flower children of that era have re-emerged in the Rave scene.
